If a woman with HIV gets pregnant, will her baby get the virus too?

‚ÄčHIV can be passed on from a mother to a baby, and is one of the most common ways children get infected with HIV, However, the risk of the virus passing from mother to child is reduced if the woman takes HIV medications throughout the pregnancy, has a scheduled C-section delivery, the babies are given HIV medicines too for 6 weeks after birth and are not breastfed by their mother.

All pregnant women should therefore get tested for HIV and other STIs early on in the pregnancy.
